Dark Leopard Magic by Sapphire Phelan
This wasn’t one of my normal reads, it took a while to get into the flow of it but once I got what was going on and tried to get into that wild animal mindset rather than just follow the action as a normal erotic tale then that made all the difference and it gave this book a new depth that I wasn’t seeing at first.
This book most definitely needs to be viewed as Animalistic in nature, it’s brutal, wild, untammed. It’s no simple love story, it’s a dangerous dance of battling beasts striving for their hearts desire. Desperate to find one another so they can answer their calling.
The characters are raw, untamed and unrepentant. They know what they are and they embrace it with a dark brooding passion. The two main characters contrast nicely and yet once together make a pleasing whole, the underlining emotions of acceptance and desire fill the tale with energy and vibrance.
Rape features heavily and is used to brutal effect as it is in the animal kingdom, no questions, no answers, it can be emotionally draining to the human sensibilties to read such rawness but again we must take on the mind of the beast and view it for what it is, what it must be.
With that the action here is also dirty and wild, gone are the aires and graces of some shifter novels, we are animal, here us roar is the call. Just fucking and sucking for pure pleasure, Sapphire delivers desperate and bestial with an edge and I found it refreshing to be hit by a different angle when it comes to these kind of stories.
The Plot is fast paced and keeps us running right from the start, the murder mystery subplot is an interesting one that gives the tale some unexpected twist and kept me hooked to the end.
Not an easy read, but a rewarding one, as the lyrical almost poetic style of the piece gives it a most unique flavour.
